Beatrix started as a doodle in a notebook. A small pumpkin-orange dragon with a red-and-cream scarf that was way too big for her. She was supposed to be a one-off sketch, but she kept showing up.
So I started writing down her world — the weathered playhouse-castle in an overgrown backyard, her garden friends (Mouse, Toad, Crow), what she was afraid of (everything, at first), and what she was learning (that smallness is its own kind of brave).
The more I wrote, the more I realized Beatrix wasn’t just a character. She was the feeling of being small in a big world and discovering that’s okay. That’s the feeling I want every reader to take away.
